Bio

Sarah "Dangerwood" Rose (MFA) is an outdoorswoman, mother and artist who recently moved to the North Carolina Piedmont from New Mexico. She uses traditional mixed-media drawing and painting to examine the interactions of humans and animals in her landscape. Her recent work focuses on the eastern woods, and she uses inks and naturally-sourced pigments to depict the non-human entities who appear on her trail-camera.

Sarah's "Death Portraits" series (2020-present) is a ritualistic approach to her encounters with wild animals who have died either as a result of their lives becoming too entwined with humans, or animals that she has hunted for food herself. She uses gestural ball-point pen, inks, and other mixed-media to reverently explore the details and spirit each animal, bringing them into a new form of afterlife on her paper.

Sarah volunteers with the Haw River Assembly, teaches art classes, and cohosts The Campfire’s Edge Podcast (https://thecampfiresedge.com/), a media project to collect the paranormal experiences of hunters, anglers and others encountering the more-than-human in wild places. She is the owner of The Hungry Forest Gallery & Press, a collaborative media project sharing stories, art, and deep ecological knowledge.
